Jan Schulte - Tropical Drums Of Deutschland

Denmark 2xLP / Compilation

A1 - Klang Fängt An

A2 - Wuhan Wuchang

A3 - Tagtraum Eines Elefanten

A4 - Troubadix In Afrika

B1 - Kleine Rosa Wolke

B2 - Sounouh

B3 - Prima Kalimba

C1 - Boat Song Part II

Tropical Drums of Deutschland is an intriguing proposition. Put together by Jan Schulte, whose Wolf Muller project draws influence from exotic new age music and gentle global drum rhythms, the compilation focuses on "tropical" music made in and around Germany, most during the mid to late 1980s. It's a fascinating listen, but far more introspective and melancholic than you might expect. Of course, there are percussive tracks that feel dancefloor-friendly - see Argile's "Tagtraum Eines Eleganten", and Sanza's beguiling, drums-and-vocals workout "Sounouh" - but for the most part the material selected by Schulte (and, on a couple of occasions, re-edited) tends towards the horizontal. This is not meant as a criticism; if anything, it makes the collection a much more beguiling listen.

Prefix Moniker - Plasmas

Abstract Ambient Noise

A1 - Stochastic Ion Heating

A2 - Stellarator

A3 - Quasi-Neutrality

A4 - Electrostatic Double Layer

B1 - Inductively Coupled

B2 - 12 EV

B3 - Helicons

B4 - Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD)

After a not‐so‐unusual quiet period, we’re back with our first proper full‐length LP. Plasmas by Prefix Moniker is an experimental electronic release that sets the stage for future Great Circles releases oriented more toward home listening than the dancefloor. Prefix Moniker is comprised of Great Circles mainstay Jason Carr (_moonraker) and Johnny DeBlase (bassist in Zevious, Sabbath Assembly & Desertion Trio). The duo has a musical relationship that dates back almost 20 years. The remote composition of Plasmas began in 2013 with Carr residing in Berkeley, CA at the time, and DeBlase in Queens, NY. Each piece consists of arrangements of Csound instruments (DeBlase) with layered synthesizer (Carr). The curious product of this collaboration suggested to Carr and DeBlase the fourth state of matter, plasma. All of the track titles were then contributed by Jason’s physicist brother, Dr. Jerry Carr. Pre‐release response to Plasmas from musicians and label friends has been overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic, including Karen Gwyer’s inclusion of two tracks (Inductively Coupled and Helicons) on her recent FACT mix (FACT mix 610).

Al Zanders - There Is Rhythm

UK 1x12" / 45 RPM / Single

A - There Is Rhythm

B - Song About A Dream

Al Zanders makes his debut on Phonica’s main label after a sold-out release on sister label Karakul and also Wolf Music, Blind Jack’s Journey and his own AZ label. The double A-side kicks off with ‘There is Rhythm’, a percussive house anthem with plenty of momemtum, a tom-tom bassline and ‘rhythm’ vocal samples and that’s even before the sun-soaked pads and euphoric synth stabs come in. On the flip, ‘Song About A Dream’ is far more of a collage - made of unconnected genres and styles, inspired by DJ Shadow - all tied together with the common theme of dreams. Shimmering astral keys and psychedelic guitar feature heavily alongside a vocalist and full choir; its a unique combination of different parts that show Al Zanders’ versatility - it really doesn’t sound like anything else.
